Five Easy Pieces
Calling this pattern”easy” is an understatement. It doesn’t get any easier than this! Alternating between garter and stockinette in an elongated checkerboard design behind fine stripes, the knitter creates an irresistibly subtle, finely-textured fabric. The body of Five Easy Pieces gives the illusion of colorwork, but it comprises only two knitted, striped rectangles, turned 90 degrees. Once turned sideways, the design presents gently-textured, flattering stripes. The front and back are two of the pieces. Two equally easy-to-knit, and slightly shaped, sleeves comprise pieces three and four, and an optional pocket becomes the fifth piece, ultimately giving the sweater its name.
This pattern is supremely versatile. Sleeve length can be chosen by the knitter, ½-length or ¾-length can be achieved simply by subtracting bands of color until the desired length is obtained. Likewise, body length can be determined by the knitter, merely by adding or subtracting the number of CO stitches to achieve the desired length--even a mini-dress length is easily doable. Size, too, is infinitely adjustable. I have written the pattern to include three basic sizes, but virtually any size can be accommodated by adding or subtracting bands of color. Color choices are infinite and, as always, are up to the knitter. Want the sweater to knit up even more easily? Choose a solid, a tonal, or even a variegated yarn. Or, stripe the sleeves and knit the body in a solid. Change up the pocket style, making it a kangaroo pocket! You do whatever you want. There are so many different ways to use the pattern. The knitter becomes the creator of her sweater, reflecting her own unique and individual style.
