The fisherman’s kep is a traditional Fair Isle hat, ideal for playing with patterns and colours. The folded headband provides extra warmth.

There is a long rib hidden behind the folding headband - the hat is knitted from that rib. The body of the hat is knitted from the cast on and the headband from the live stitches of the long rib. There is a short rib that is then grafted on by hand at the top of the headband. The crown can be knitted on the machine or by hand, but it must be topped by a tassel to ensure it dangles nicely.

The kep combines techniques from machine and hand knitting, so to be able to knit it, you must be able to do both. It is a great item to practice finishing technique or develop new colourway ideas.
