This rectangular shawl is knit from one short end to the other. One end features a gently undulating waves pattern, while the opposite end is worked with a diagonal edge with lava-flow motifs. Note that all the lace patterning is charted only.

Skills required: Basic chart-reading skills, knit/purl, yarn-over increases and basic lace decreases (Ktog, SSK).

This pattern was inspired by the Norse imagery and legends in Betsy Tobin’s book Iceland. It features motifs from Freya’s odyssey under the sea to rescue her jeweled necklace, the arched gates of Valhalla, and the waves and lava flows caused by the volcanic eruption on the island in 1000 AD.

This pattern is available as a standalone, but is also part of the 6-pattern Heroines Shawl Club 2016 ebook also available here on Ravelry.
