Notes: This is an updated, improved, and expanded version of my original, Emily’s Favourite Socks Pattern. My Favourite Socks are very simple; I cannot take any credit for the original idea.
They’re knit from the cuff down in 3x1 ribbing, with a classic heel flap and short row heel. I love to play around with adding contrasting heels, toes and stripes to each pair and have added 4 variations to the original 3x1 rib to provide a few different options for stitch pattern and placement. This updated version of the pattern also includes two additional sizes.
When choosing a size, keep in mind that the sock must be able to stretch over your heel and not just your ankle or foot and that tight socks make for cold feet! I prefer that my socks fit with about ¼” positive ease, but these socks will fit comfortably ranging from ½” negative ease to ½” positive ease. I like to err on the larger side, so that I don’t have to wrestle into my socks every day.
Please note that each version fit with slightly different ease. 1x1 ribbing makes for the most elastic leg, while the cable pattern in Version B creates the tightest fit, and stretches the least.
Notes in pattern indicate when to change colours for each version, but these are only guidelines. Please experiment with amount of colours and placement of stripes - the options are endless!
