Endellion
A seamless sweater, Endellion is knit using different patterns for different parts of its body. It features medallion motifs on the front and back yokes and regal-like motifs decorate the wide-fitting raglan sleeves. The 3-colour work fabric in worsted-weight wool makes for a thick and luxurious fabric. A majestic sweater designed to make you feel like a queen wrapped in wool!
Knit top-down and in the round, using just 3 colours (light, medium and dark), once the neck (choose between a turtle or crew neck) has been knitted you will divide the front and back yokes, and left and right sleeves and then make gradual increases to shape the shoulders as you follow from the colourwork Charts. The body and sleeves are then separated at the underarms and knitted separately. Keep the body in a dark contrasting colour for a dramatic and flattering look, or play around with the colour order for a completely different look.
Sizing
Due to the large motifs on this sweater, the sizes go up in very large increments each time, so I have chosen to label the sizes 1, 2, 3, 4 and 5 because they don’t match typical S, M, L etc. sizing. Choose your size based on your bust measurement and the amount of positive ease you wish to have. The model in the photo has a bust measurement of 90 cm and is wearing a size 1, giving her 10 cm of positive ease for a classic fit.
Level of difficulty and skills required
Adventurous. This pattern is for you if you are already experienced in stranded colour work knitting and looking for a new challenge. The patterning which gives the design its unique look requires experienced tensioning and catching due to some very large floats at the back. Be aware that most of the patterning also requires 3 colours per round. Knowledge of chart-reading, Short Rows and Tubular cast-on and off is assumed.
Gauge (in colourwork pattern)
10 x 10 cm = 18 stitches x 20 rows on 4.5 mm needles.
Yarn
“Hamelton Tweed” by BC Garn 100m/50g. Or any worsted/DK that knits to this gauge.
NOTE ON YARN: This is a thick sweater! However, many of my testers knit this design using sport-weight yarn with great results. You will just need to size up one or two sizes.
Metrage
MC (Curry) = 5 (6, 7, 8, 9) skeins.
CC1 (Natural) = 1.5 (2, 3, 4, 5) skeins.
CC2 (Black) = 5-6 (6-7, 7-8, 8-9, 9) skeins (depending on desired body length).
Materials
1 x 4.5 mm circular needle for the main fabric.
1 x 4 mm circular needle for the ribbings (you may wish to use dpns for the cuffs). Or needle to get gauge and then one size down for the ribbings.
