The Ellesmere Cowl took a while to get it’s name, I couldn’t decide what name felt “right”. After pondering for months it suddenly hit me: this cowl (and it’s original prototype) were both made while I was on holiday at Lake Ellesmere, almost three years apart!

Lake Ellesmere is where we usually go on holiday, and this cowl is the perfect holiday knit since it is fast, has a repetitive stitch pattern, and doesn’t require a huge amount of concentration. Both times I made this cowl I was curled up in an armchair in front of a fire, and knit the whole cowl in almost one sitting.

This pattern has been tech edited and has written and charted instructions.

k = Knit
p = Purl
Sl1p = slip one stitch purlwise
Sl1k = slip one stitch knitwise
C1F = cable one front. Slip one stitch onto cable needle, hold in front of work and knit the next stitch, then knit the stitch off the cable needle.
C6F = slip three stitches onto the cable needle and hold in front of work, knit three stitches from the left hand needle, then knit the three stitches from the cable needle.
C6B = slip three stitches onto the cable needle and hold behind your work, knit three stitches from the left hand needle, then knit the three stitches from the cable needle.
