ABOUT THE DESIGN

Duyên, pronounced like “you win” but as a single syllable, is a Vietnamese word that is commonly translated as “fate.” However, duyên is much more nuanced than that, and there are many phrases that use duyên to describe one’s connection to others: enduring relationships, failed relationships, missed opportunities, and so on.

Designed specifically with gifting in mind–for the people whose lives are intertwined with ours–the Duyên shawl is simple enough to be a relaxing knit and engaging enough that it’s enjoyable to make again and again. Additionally, the shawl requires minimal blocking, making it easier to care for–a great gift knit that requires little maintenance on the part of the recipient.

CONSTRUCTION

Duyên is a sideways triangular shawl that begins with the right point, with increases worked until the full depth is achieved. Then decreases are worked, ending with the left point. The diagonal lines of the motif are created with purl stitches against a background of stockinette, making a fabric that is fully reversible.
