Make ice cream earmuffs or a headband with this dual-purpose pattern!

Use small amounts of different colored yarn to make a pair of cozy earmuffs or a warm headband to keep your ears toasty in the wintertime! A modified design of Barbara Walker’s Long-Slip Textured Pattern will create the waffle cone, and simple knit/purl increase/decrease combinations make each scoop; recreate the same shape in stockinette stitch for the back lining. Finish the earmuffs with a braided top piece, the headband with a bit of kitchener stitch, sew the pieces together, and complete your item with either braided or twisted ties. Then wear your favorite flavors to keep your head warm while eating ice cream in the cold!

Pieces: earmuffs are made up of two 2 scoop cones, and two matching back lining pieces, plus the top connecting braid and the ties; headband is made up of two 3 scoop cones which are grafted together, plus the matching back lining piece and ties.

Size: adult (resize by adjusting gauge)

Yarn: worsted weight; 5 yards for each scoop and each cone; 30 yards for earmuffs lining, 36 yards for headband lining

Gauge: 4.5 stitches per inch

Skills needed: slip-stitches, basic increases/decreases; kitchener stitch, sewing pieces together (how-tos for all finishing steps included in pattern)
