Domino Stockinette
What happens when you use stockinette stitch instead of the usual garter stitch for a domino square? You get a kite shape that can be sewn into a 6-piece mat or into rows for an afghan! The knitting is very simple and goes quickly. There are only 2 pattern rows with “purl across” as the wrong-side row. Kroy Sock’s striped yarn made it fun with one skein making all 6 pieces.
At gauge, the domino stockinette kite is 6 inches wide and 7 inches tall. I blocked the individual pieces but the finished mat needed blocking, too. I worked the striped yarn straight from the skein and was surprised to find it gave me 3 pieces of one color combination and 3 of another! I can’t guarantee every Kroy skein will do the same but serendipity might happen for you, too.
Skills needed: cast on, knit, purl, SK2P (center double decrease), p3tog and bind off in knit stitch.
Gauge is not important in this pattern. Any block-able yarn/thread will work. Make a swatch to check gauge and appearance.
26 yards of Kroy Socks yarn will make 1 kite-shaped piece at gauge.
One 166 yard skein will make about 6 kite-shaped pieces.
