Sorbet is another name for the Cornelian Cherry and translates to Dirndl in (Austrian) German. And a Dirndl, in turn, is either said fruit, a girl or a traditional Austrian or Bavarian dress. This shawl was originally designed as an accessory for my mum’s hand-sewn Dirndl dress and in the colors that were chosen for my hometown’s newly created traditional garbs.
The version I made for myself is more reminiscent of the beautiful color of the Dirndl fruit – a vibrant dark pink – and the fruity frozen desert that I love.

The shawl is knit top-down and features textures (seed-, garter- and stockinette stitch), stripes, short-row sections, eyelets and finally a crochet-detail that adds another pop of color. An i-cord surrounds the shawl for a finished look (thanks to the i-cord tab cast on, i-cord edges and an i-cord bind off).

The color sequence of the pattern is that of the Dirndl dress version (grays, green and red), but you can play with color and use up some leftovers as I did with the Dirndl fruit version (variegated, teal, gray and neons).

Finished Measurements: 220 cm / 86.5” wingspan, 60 cm / 23.5” height at center

Yarn: 4 (or more) colors fingering weight yarn

Yardage: 836 m / 913 yards in total

• Color A: 410 m / 448) yards
• Color B: 100 m / 109 yards
• Color C: 300 m / 328 yards
• Color D: 26 m / 28 yards

Gauge: 22 sts / 30 rows = 10cm / 4” in seed stitch (relaxed after blocking) – although gauge is not critical, it will influence the size of your finished shawl!

Needles: US 6/4 mm (or size needed to obtain gauge)

Sorbet ist im Englischen ein anderen Name der Kornellkirsche, die in Österreich als Dirndl bekannt ist. Und ein Dirndl ist wiederum entweder diese Frucht, ein Mädchen oder aber das Kleid (im Pielachtal nennt man das die Dreifaltigkeit der Dirndl). Dieses Dreieckstuch wurde ursprünglich als Accessoire für das Handgenähte Dirndl meiner Mutter entworfen, in den Farben der neu entworfenen Tracht meines Heimatorts.
Die Version, die ich für mich gemacht habe, erinnert dabei mehr an die Farbe der Dirndl Frucht – ein kräftiges dunkles pink – und an das leckere, fruchtige Dessert!

Das Tuch wird von oben nach unten in verschiedenen Texturen gearbeitet (Perlmuster, kraus rechts, glatt rechts), dabei spielen auch verkürzte Reihen, Lochmuster und eine kleine Häkelverzierung eine wichtige Rolle. Eingerahmt wird das ganze von einem i-cord, das für einen schönen, geraden Abschluss sorgt (dank i-cord-Anschlag, i-cord-Kante und i-cord-Abketten).

Die Farbangaben im Strickmuster folgen dem Farbverlauf der Dirndl-Kleid-Variante (grau, grün und rot), aber man kann natürlich mehr oder weniger Farben verwenden, Reste aufarbeiten und sich austoben (wie ich in der Dirndl-Frucht-Variante mit Neonfarben).
