The pattern of the light filtered by trees, shimming speckles of gold on a pond, the light between the shadows of an iron gate or railings. Whether it is the summer high after the depths of a dark and dismal winter or the light bouncing off fresh fallen snow, light is something that has a mystical quality. But dappled light is the light of faery tales; it is in the dappled light where magic happens …
This is a simple a top down, crescent shaped shawl that is worked in two colours. The garter stitch body is broken with two stripes of a contrasting colour breaking up the shawl like shafts of light. Then the dappled lace panel grabs your interest, before the light strikes twice more with two further stripes which sit before the border with a hint of lace. Highly adaptable size wise, this shawl can be adjusted to suit your needs in both the main body and the border. It is designed to be worked in a heavy lace, however, would work beautifully in other weights with a change of needle size and fewer or additional repeats where necessary or desired.
Size: The size as written – 19 inches (48.5 cm) deep and 94 inches (239 cm) wide after blocking.
Yarn: Isager Alpaca 2 (three skeins of Yarn A and one of Yarn B – I only used 14g/70m of Yarn B), Miss Babs Yearning (one skein of Yarn A and a partial of Yarn B), The Fibre Co Meadow (two skeins of Yarn A and one of Yarn B), Posh Yarn Gretchen Heavy Lace (two skeins of Yarn A, one of Yarn B). Though designed to be worked in a heavy lace this would work beautifully in other weights with a change of needle size and fewer or additional repeats where necessary or desired.
Circular Needles: 3.25mm (US3), 3.5mm (US4), 3.75mm (US5) and 4mm (US6), about 1m in length, or needles to create a pleasing fabric.
You will also need: Stitch Markers, Needle (for weaving in ends), blocking pins and mats.
Gauge: Gauge is not overly important as this is a shawl but a looser gauge will result in addition yardage requirements. The gauge achieved on this shawl 17 sts to 4 ins using 3.5mm (US4) needles on garter stitch after blocking using Isager Alpaca 2.
You will find it useful to print your pattern on a colour printer, however, coloured pencils could be used to highlight aspects of the pattern. Rows, on the charts, using Yarn A are coloured purple whereas rows using Yarn B are green.
This pattern is both fully written and charted.
