Da Vinci Wings
When I showed this shawl to a dear friend who is a science teacher he immediately felt reminded of Da Vinci’s flying machine. I looked it up and lo and behold he was spot on. Da Vinci had invented a device that would enable man to fly. Based on the flight of birds he designed a winged framework that could be steered by a pilot.
If you want to wrap yourself up in Da Vinci Wings, you can knit this shawl in several variations. You can knit the full version that is made with two tiers: one large one small. The widest part of the large tier runs over 108 stitches. The widest part of the small tier runs over 54 stitches. If you knit only one tier, you can choose between the large or the small. Therefore, you can use any yarn weight. If you prefer dk or sport weight, I recommend that you knit the smaller tier. The length can be adjusted by the number of modules you knit.
You will need two contrasting yarns. Yarn A for the “spokes” and Yarn B for the space between the spokes. The amount will depend on the size you want to knit. In any case you will need much more of Yarn B. I knitted the full version with Moca Cotton and a combination of Wollmeise as Yarn A and Wollbonbon Merino 4ply as Yarn B: (length: 90”/229cm – width widest part: 14”/36.5cm) and used 370y of Yarn A (245y for the large tier and 125y for the small tier) and 1420y of Yarn B (1050y for the larger tier and 370y for the small tier).
Da Vinci Wings is a modular knit, but you will add the modules as you go. There is no seaming involved. Since all the modules are slightly different you will find the instructions for each individual module. Because the instructions are given in written AND in charted form I have created two shorter pdfs rather than one very large one. One with the written instructions only and one with just the charts. Both versions contain complete guidelines and graphics. They are enriched with ample photo tutorials on the techniques of shaping and joining the modules. This makes Da Vinci Wings a doable project for most knitters.
