Fairly Squarely
In days of old most shawls and shawlettes were shaped like a semicircle or a triangle. Some patterns were in the shape of a huge square which was then folded to make it triangular. These days, however, the world of knitting has changed, and now you can find all kinds of gorgeous geometric shapes which come in the most bright and beautiful colors. You can see from my other patterns that I have fully embraced the rich variety and diversity of modern knitting, but I also know that sometimes the simple things are the best things!
Fairly squarely takes this simple yet elegant geometric shape and gives it a marvellous modern look! And being fair to the square there is no intention of reducing it to a triangle! Fairly squarely works with a whole host of color combinations and yarns, and as it is a modular knit – with no seaming involved! – there are countless ways to play with shapes and shades!
All you need are two different and distinguishable yarns – preferably fingering weight, though you can feel free to use yarns that are thicker or thinner. I knitted one version with two solids of Wollmeise Pure, another one with Wollmeise Pure combined with Wollbonbon Merino 4ply (wollbonbon.de). Wollbonbon Merinos have very long color gradients, and this works beautifully with the Fairly Squarely design. The third version is made of Zauberball paired with Wool Finest by Schoppel. Zauberballs have a faster changing gradient, which makes every square unique – so this knit was filled with many pleasant surprises.
Fairly Squarely is a completely reversible shawl. It is knitted in modules, but with no seaming involved. All instructions are written and charted, and although the joining techniques are easy to master, you will find photo tutorials to guide you through the process. Some parts of the modules are worked in the round, so you will need to apply the magic loop or knit with double pointed needles.
Right-angles at the ready – happy knitting!
