Pattern description from Weekend Knitting: “Inspired by the children’s classic The Elves and the Shoemaker by the Brothers Grimm, Kate Sokoloff designed these whimsical slippers with bulky quick-knit yarn so, she says, ‘they can magically appear overnight to warm the elf-toes of children.’ Weekend Knitting technical editor Lori Gayle came up with the idea to adapt the pattern to include the Christmas stocking.”

Finished Measurements: To fit up to child’s shoe size 4, (7, 11.5). Christmas stocking approximately 14 inches around the top opening, and 18 inches long from top to toe.

Yarn:

  • Booties: Version 1: GGH Fantastica, (70% wool, 10% alpaca, 15% acrylic, 5% nylon; 30 yards / 50 grams): 2 (2, 3) balls for children’s sizes, 5 balls for Christmas stocking.
  • Version 2: GGH Horstia Marokko, (100% wool; 87 yards / 200 grams): 1 skein for all children’s sizes, 2 skeins for Christmas stocking.
  • Version 3: GGH Naturwolle, (100% wool; 110 yards / 100 grams): 2 skeins for all children’s sizes, 3 skeins for Christmas stocking (used double throughout).
  • Cuffs:* GGH apart (100% nylon; 121 yards / 50 grams): 1 ball for all versions (used doubled throughout).
  • Slippers shown in book in Fantastica #4 orange mix with Apart #11 orange; in Fantastica #7 blue-green with Apart #16 fuchsia; and Marokko #111 blue with Apart #15 teal.
  • Christmas stocking shown in book in Naturwolle #soft 02 variegated orange with Apart #16 fuchsia.

Needles:

  • One set of four double-pointed needles (dpn) size US 9 (5.5 mm).
  • One set of four dpn size US 13 (9 mm).
  • The stocking may also be knitted on a short circular needle, changing to dpn when necessary.
  • Change needle size if necessary to obtain the correct gauge.

Notions: Stitch marker, yarn needle, 6” length of shoelace for reinforcing hanging loop (optional, for Christmas stocking).

Gauge: Using slipper yarn and larger needles, 7 stitches = 3 inches and 16 rounds = 4 inches in garter stitch in the round.
