If you work it up in double knitting, you should follow the chart with mostly light colored squares, working each row as presented (once every two rows, the colors are reversed so the chart is easier to follow).

If you want to use the pattern for stranded knitting, use the simple chart that shows the whole design.

Have fun, experiment with the motif, try felting the double knit square and make a marvelous potholder.
