This pattern combines a few favourite things for me; squishy, cosy, and pink. I love squishy yarn and cables. I wear gauntlets a lot, as I enjoy that extra cosy around the wrists. I have had this pink yarn in my stash for a while unsure of what to make, and I decided to make it into something that I would wear a lot.
Materials
• 185 metres/202yds (200 metres/218yds) of fingering weigh yarn. Ideally, the yarn will have a strong twist to it to show off the textures of the cable.
• This sample was knit (in the large size) with Tough Love Sock from SweetGeorgia Yarns (389m/425yds; 115gm/4.06oz; 80% Merino, 20% Nylon) Colourway: Grapefruit.
• 3mm (US 3) needles
• 2.5 mm (US 2) needles
• Cable needle,
• Stitch markers
• Stitch holder(s) to hold 14-20 stitches
• Tapestry needle
• Scissors
• Measuring tape
Pattern Notes
This gauntlet features a braided cable on a reverse stockinette background, which makes for a very stretchy and cosy fabric and fit. The gauntlet begins with a k2p2 ribbing, then moves into the cabled section, and finishes with a k2p2 rib. Care in design has been taken to have the ribbed cuff flow into the braided cables, and then allow the braids to unravel into the ribbed cuff at the top. The gauntlet is worked from the bottom up, and an ambidextrous thumb gusset is seamlessly worked at the same time. These thumb gusset stitches are later picked up to complete the thumb. The thumb is worked in reverse stockinette, and finished with a k2p2 rib.
Sizing
The gauntlet has a fair amount of stretch in it, as the cables on reverse stockinette act as a stretchy ribbing.
This pattern is written for two sizes: small (large).
• For the small size, unstretched, the garment measures 11 cm (4.5 inches) around at the palm, and can stretch up to 15 cm (6 inches).
• For the large size, unstretched, the garment measures 15 cm (6 inches) around at the palm, and can stretch up to 20 cm (8 inches).
The sizing can also be adjusted by using a thicker or thinner yarn, or going up or down a needle size to increase or decrease the size.
Tension
The cabled pattern draws the stitches in more, but there is a fair amount of stretch which brings flexibility into tension.
28 sts = 10cm/4in over stockinette in 3mm (US 3) needles
32 sts=10cm/4in over cabled pattern in 3mm (US 3) needles
Directions
A cuff is worked, followed by establishing the braided cable pattern. The thumb gusset is then worked, where the instructions for the small(large) sizes split on Round 20. The gauntlet top is then worked, followed by the thumb.
Cable pattern is provided in a chart, as well as written-out.
