Cha-Ching Tam
by Laura Nelkin
This bottom‑up tam plays with a modified beaded Coin Stitch ribbing. The Crown shaping incorporates the pattern so that it flows seamlessly to the bind-off. I did design matching mitts (page 107), but start with the tam since it’s knit on larger needles and has minimal shaping, making it a great starter project to learn this stitch.
One of my knitting group buddies made a lovely cream-colored scarf using the Coin Stitch (a simple faux cable pattern) alternated with ribbing. Of course, my first thought was this: “Where are the beads?” So I ran home and fiddled with beads until I found out how to place the bead right at the base of the slipped stitch. Fun times!
