The pattern contains written out instructions in American terms using common stitch abbreviations.
The pattern difficulty falls somewhere between “easy” and “intermediate” level as defined by http://www.craftyarncouncil.com/skill.html. I would not try it as my first project if I were a complete beginner, as it involves a fair number of post stitches and requires a certain level of dexterity with the hook. Having said that, I did make it very detailed and included PLENTY of pictures, which is why it is so long (8 pages total!). I have also written a lot of notes to assist with the tricky bits. You probably will find that once you have finished you first sandal, the second will be done much quicker.
