The Caprice Beanie is an adaptable piece. Its adjustable length ensures a perfect fit, whether you prefer it folded or unfolded. The reversible nature of the half-brioche stitch offers two unique styles, providing many styling options to match your mood and outfit.
Drawing inspiration from the musical term “caprice” - a section showcasing a performer’s skill - this design encourages you to venture into new creative territories, promising enjoyment and a standout finished piece that will turn heads.

Sizes: 1 (2, 3, 4, 5, 6)
Approximately equivalent to: baby (toddler, child, adult-small, adult-medium, adult-large)
Finished head circumference:
- 31 (35.5, 40, 44.5, 49, 53.5) cm
- 12½ (14¼, 16, 17¾, 19½, 21¼)″
Designed to be worn with 12% negative ease to fit snugly for head circumferences:
- 36-40 (41-45, 46-50, 51-54, 55-57, 58-60) cm
- 14½ -16 (16½-18, 18½-20, 20½-21½, 22-23, 23-24) “
Yarn: DK weight or fingering/sport weight and lace weight suri held together. Depending on the length of the hat, allow approximately (of each):
- 100 (150, 190, 220, 250, 275) m
- 110 (160, 205, 240, 270, 300) yds
Yarn used in the sample (size 5) is 1 skein of Moondrake Co. Chibi Sport (100% superwash Merino; 338 m 370 yds / 100 g) in colourway Snow White held together with a strand of 2 skeins of Universal Yarn Penna (50% Suri Alpaca, 28% Merino, 22% Nylon; 170 m 186 yds / 25 g) in colourway Eggshell.
Gauge: 18 sts & 44 rows = 10 cm / 4″ in Half-brioche / Half Fisherman’s rib stitch in the round after blocking (unstretched). Note that row gauge is not crucial for this project.
Suggested needles: 2.75 mm (US 2) circulars 60 cm / 24″ long.
Notions: Stitch markers, tape measure.
Techniques used: Judy’s magic cast-on, working brioche including increases, Grandma’s favourite bind-off.
Notes: The beanie is worked seamlessly from the top down in the round. Stitches are cast-on using Judy’s magic cast-on and worked in the round in half-brioche st with increases to desired circumference, then worked even until desired length is reached and bound off using preferred bind-off. It is also fully reversible.
