Here is a fingerless mitt pattern with four cable stitch pattern variations. Three of the mitt patterns have cables that lean in opposite directions for the right and left hands, so they mirror each other. One pattern has a symmetrical cable, so it is the same for both the right and the left hands. The basic mitt pattern has welts at the bottom and top. Instructions are given specifically for working on double-pointed needles, but you could also knit these mitts on one long circular needle or on two circular needles.

These mitts are knitted at a tighter gauge than is typical for a worsted weight yarn, using a smaller needle than is typical for a worsted weight yarn. I used a merino wool yarn that is a pleasure to knit and is very comfortable on the hands.

Size of Mitts: These fingerless mitts are sized to fit an adult woman, although I do know that they work equally well for teenagers!

Yarn: “Shepherd’s Wool”, worsted weight (4 ounces, 250 yards per skein). This yarn is made in Michigan by Stonehedge Fiber Mill

Gauge: 11 sts per 2 inches in st st, knitted in the round on size 5 needles. . One skein is more than enough yarn to make two pairs of mitts.

Needles: A set of 4 double-pointed needles, US Size 5 (3.75mm), or needle size to achieve gauge.

Additional Notions: Stitch markers; a small length of contrasting yarn to act as a stitch holder for the thumb, darning needle to weave in ends.
