This cabled box cover is an addictive little modular pattern - once you knit up one and see how it’s all constructed in one piece, you’ll want to find more boxes around the house that need covering! The pattern works for any size box, and with any weight yarn (though, I’d recommend no heavier than worsted, or your bulky box might start to look more like a pillow or something).

This any-gauge, custom sized pattern can be made for any box with an attached lid - the whole piece is knit with the box nearby, so that you can measure each part by holding it up to the box and size it all accordingly. The knit piece is then glued onto the box, making your new knit container permanent; perfect for gifting something special, or just holding something for yourself!

This pattern uses the sideways edge cast-on technique (which I blogged about here) so that it’s all knit in one piece, with no picking up stitches, and minimal seaming at the end. You’ll need to use double pointed needles when working around the lid and bottom sections - you won’t be knitting all the way in the round, but rather in a U shape.

As long as you carefully follow each step, this pattern isn’t very hard, is pretty darn quick for a small box (and is fun to knit over and over to cover every box you have!) but because of the short rows, custom sizing, and modular sections, it’s a bit on the intermediate side of difficulty levels.
