Hap shawls were a wardrobe staple for generations of Shetland Isles women, and this traditional design is enjoying a revival today. They were typically formed from plain centre square or triangle paired with a striped border and a lacy edging.
In the second instalment on Mary Henderson’s three-part pattern, we have instructions for the border. This uses the feather-and-fan-lace stitch, worked in a stripe sequence of six natural fleece shades of wool. It is knitted onto the centre triangle which we had instructions for in issue 90 of The Knitter.
