Bobbie Hood is a comfy hood accessory that’s totally reversible for two different looks, and includes several different options for the bottom section: braided or i-cord ties, a buttoning strap, or full scarf ends!

This pattern is written for small{large} sizes—the small size is a short, fitted hood for an adult, meant more to be a child size; the large size is an adult size hood that comes out over the face to protect from a light rain or wind (see schematic for all measurements). If you wish to slightly adjust the size, you may adjust your gauge to be a little bigger or smaller.

The bottom section has narrow and wide options, as well as scarf, buttoning, and tying options, which will all use different amounts of yarn. You may want to wait until you reach the bottom to decide which options to choose, based on how much yarn you have remaining.

This is an intermediate level pattern that assumes you already know things like the long tail cast-on, wrap + turn, increases & decreases, etc. Photos of the whole process are included. The pattern is entirely written, but a chart of the stitch pattern repeat is included too.

Years ago, I designed a bonnet/hood pattern called Gentle on My Mind (after a Glen Campbell album). That was in stockinette, any-gauge, any-weight, any-size, and I made one oversized sample in bulky weight that I always loved, more of a hood than the other bonnet-ish samples. I decided to repurpose a chunky stitch pattern from another pattern I designed (Mikkey, a cowl) and design a hood using the same construction as the bonnet pattern. This spinoff is named after Bobbie Gentry, who did an album of duets with Campbell.

I chose this stitch pattern because A: the slipped stitches make a dense fabric for a warm, thick hood, and B: it’s reversible! The hood is designed intentionally to be able to wear it with either side out, for two different looks. Choose highly contrasting yarns for a bolder look, or more similar colors for a subtle design.

The main hood is a regular pattern with two sizes in two sections, using short rows, increases, and decreases for shaping—the top of head is worked sideways with stitches made along the back edge for later, and the back of head is worked back and forth with short rows and decreases. The bottom section then offers several choices; a narrow or wide bottom can be paired with either hood size, and any hood can have scarf ends, a buttoning strap, or i-cord/braided ties.
