Black Lace Stole
Gladys Amedro, using the name Gema Ord, designed this stole for Jamieson and Smith J & S. She recommended the use of a circular needle or a pair of 3.0 mm needles English size 11; US size 2½ and “three balls of Cobweb Lace Shetland Wool as supplied by Messers. Jamieson & Smith (SHETLAND WOOL BROKERS LTD).” to produce a stole with a finished size of approximately 58” × 24”.
The white stole pictured was knit by Daniel Herrera with US size 3.0 circular needle using Jamieson & Smith two-ply Shetland Supreme, a beautiful worsted lace weight yarn. The first time I dressed it out I dressed it short and wide; the second time I dressed it longer and narrower. The gray scarf pictured, knit by Judy Wargo, is made with Jamieson & Smith Shetland lace weight yarn and has a finished size of approximately 74” × 16”.
Although gauge is a very important factor when knitting a garment that must fit, when knitting this design as either a rectangular lace stole or lace scarf gauge is of much less importance. What is most important is that your choice of yarn and needles, your knitting tension and the tension under which you dress out the finished shawl produce a fabric that is pleasing to you.
