Pattern #5006

These socks can be made to fit either men or women. Instructions are provided for both. The sock is knitted from the cuff to the toe. There is some shaping of the leg, a turned heel, and a graduated wedge toe. The leg uses a slip stitch rib pattern which hugs the leg well. Part of that pattern is continued along the instep. For both socks, I used yarns that are produced by Michigan fiber folks.

Yarn: men’s socks (top photo): 2 skeins of “Almost Handspun” Sport 2-ply (250 yards, 3 ounces per skein; made by Stonehedge Fiber Mill, LLC). women’s socks (bottom photo): 1 skein of Sweet Freedom (400 yards per skein; made by Briar Rose Fibers).

Needles: men’s socks: one set of double pointed US size 1 needles and one set of double pointed US size 2 needles. women’s socks: one set of double pointed US size 0 needles and one set of double pointed US size 1 needles.

Gauge: men’s sock: knitting circularly, 7 sts = 1” and 9 rounds = 1” in stockinette stitch on size 2 needles. women’s socks: knitting circularly, 8 sts = 1” and 11 rounds = 1” in stockinette stitch on size 1 needles.
