Large rock formations dot the woods. In some, a system of cracks and caves where people easily fit has formed over the centuries. Other rocks look like boulders moved around by what once was a sea. These rocks display an amazing network of small holes arranged in a semi-organized manner: Honeycomb weathering in sandstone, otherwise known as alveoli or stonelace. This is woody and stony Berdorf in Luxembourg, a geologic dreamland.
The Alvéolis cowl / scarf is inspired by these rocks and fascinating stonelace. Modules worked in different directions are combined to create a cowl or a scarf with honeycomb-like colored accents, negative space, seamless joins, and a wavy and textured lace pattern reminiscent of flowing water. Join us on this colorful journey and go with the flow!
The cowl / scarf is freely named after alvéoles (honeycomb in French) and alveoli.
For best effect, use a round yarn with good stitch definition. Yarn weights ranging from fingering to worsted would be suitable. As for colorways, I would recommend solid, semi-solid, speckled yarns, combined with a gradient as background color for the rectangles with color accents.
Please check at the bottom of the page for tips on yarn selection and substitution.

2.75 mm (US size 2) 120 cm / 47 inches circular needle or size to obtain gauge.
The long circular needles are used to work the CO and to accommodate the large number of stitches.

Thank you note
I’d like to send a big thank you to my truly awesome test knitters on Ravelry: fiberlass, saralevene.
Thanks a lot for your time and dedication, for helping me make this pattern even better and for showing how the pattern would look like with different yarns!
Notes about the yarns
This pattern uses six colorways in total. MC is the blue gradient (DK) used as background color. CC1 to 4 (DK) are used for the color accents (same yarn base as MC, but in solid). Section 1 – Holey Rock (the blue rectangles with color accents) uses the yarns MC, CC1 to 4. CC5 is the Garnstudio DROPS Alpaca yarn in color Light Maroon Mix (heather almost solid, Sport). Section 2 – Flowing Water (the wavy portions with stripes) uses CC5 as background color, plus CC1 and CC2 for color stripes. Note that Section 2 – Flowing Water uses two yarn weights, Sport and DK. CC5, the Sport weight, needs to be thinner than the other colorways for the pattern to work.
When substituting yarn for Section 1 – Holey Rock, avoid inelastic fibers such as silk, cotton, linen, hemp, etc., and man-made fibers that won’t keep the block; wool or blends with high wool content are best.
When substituting yarn for Section 2 – Flowing Water, use a thinner yarn so that the blocked gauge of 2 rows in CC5 for Pattern E – Erosion approximately matches the blocked gauge of 1 st in MC for Pattern A – Holey Rock Edging (begin).
