Here’s a fun, textured hat to knit for a guy. Knit from the top down with a circular needle. No double points are needed! Begin by provisionally casting on and knitting a square. Then pick up stitches around the square and knit the hat sides in the round using three textured stitch patterns. Finish with a twisty, stretchy bind off. You’ll need 120 yards of worsted weight yarn and size 7 (4.5 mm) 16” circular knitting needle for a hat that measures 20” around (not stretched) x 9” deep (from middle of square top to bottom). For a larger hat, use size 8 needles and Aran/heavy worsted weight yarn and for a smaller hat use a DK weight yarn with size 6 needles. The 3 page pattern includes written row and round instructions with tutorials for a crochet cast on and the twisty bind off. Check out the Aldo Scarf to make a matching set. Pattern was revised and updated on February 25, 2025. An option to turn the hat into a wrist bag are now also included in the pattern.
