Vinter Wool

A uniquely Norwegian yarn warm and hardy enough for frozen Oslo winters, Vinter Wool is a small-batch, hand-dyed yarn celebrating one of the world’s oldest sheep breeds… A remarkable yarn that speaks right to the heart of everyone passionate about fiber and color!
- Vinter Wool is made with 70% Norwegian white sheep wool and 30% Norwegian wildsheep wool. The wildsheep, or Old Norwegian sheep breed, has been reared in the traditional fashion for 3,000 years, living outside year-round on the heathered moorlands of the Norwegian coast, where they thrive thanks to their incredibly warm wool!
-
We partnered with a small mill in Norway that artfully washes, combs, and cards the fibers to maximize the smoothness, luster, and strength of this incredible wool mix, while preserving its toothy feel, distinctive elasticity, and natural lanolin content for a delightfully sheepy yarn. Incredibly warm, it’s also amazingly beautiful!
-
The hand-dyed palette is full of colors straight from a Norwegian wood, from mysterious Pine Bough to tantalizing Bright Berry. The mix of the white sheep wool and varying blacks, browns, and grays of the wildsheep wool makes every color deeply fascinating and richly varied, and you’ll also see longer “guard hairs” from the wildsheep in the mix, adding an appealing rustic quality. A truly artisanal yarn, each skein is unique… That’s part of what makes it so special!
-
This 3-ply yarn knits up at a light worsted/DK weight on US 5-7 needles, and each 50-gram skein gives you 120 yards. A tiny bit thick-and-thin as you knit, Vinter Wool blooms into an even, springy fabric when blocked. You’ll love it for stranded colorwork, textured knits, and swaths of stockinette that let the yarn’s character shine… Check out our growing collection of knitting patterns in Vinter Wool for lots of inspiration!
Norway’s animal protection laws are some of the strictest in the world, and the small mill we partner with is committed to promoting the welfare of animals, the local farming economy, and the environment. This is truly a yarn you can feel great about!
Please Note: This hand-dyed yarn will vary from skein to skein and especially between dye lots. Be sure to purchase enough for your project and consider alternating skeins to reduce color pooling. Saturated colors may cross-stain during blocking, so if you’re knitting them with lighter colors, we recommend taking the precaution of soaking the dark colors first in a vinegar and cold water bath to remove excess dye.
