My first trip to Hawaii was in May 1999. I spent most of my vacation on Kauai, also known as the “Garden Isle.” Indeed! This was an incredibly lush island, full of tropical jungles, dramatic canyons, waterfalls, bold flowers and plants of all kinds (many of which I had never seen before).
My “Kauai” art yarn is a mixture of wool, mohair, tencel, bamboo and recycled sari silk. The tencel and bamboo create shine, while the recycled sari silk and mohair give distinctive texture. The color palette evokes some key elements of the island: vivid green growth, iron red earth, thistle, red, pink and fire bourgenvilla, orchids and tall white waterfalls including Akaka Falls. The yarn is plied with dozens of fabric leaves and flowers, particularly orchids. “Kauai” is approximately 122 yards, and weighs 4 ounces/115 grams. It’s a thick ‘n’ thin aran weight yarn, good for knitting on size 10 US needles and up.
This yarn will fill you with much aloha (love, fondness, good wishes) and mahalo (thankfulness).
