The shape of this shawl, a square with one triangular section missing, means it stays on your shoulders. With the straight lower edge, it also emphasizes your waist, rather than pointing downwards…

Although I have specified a hook size and yarn weight, this pattern works with any sized hook or yarn. Ideally you want a fairly firm fabric that lays flat, although the longer flag may curl at the end. I have found that a row of US sc (UK dc) around the edges of the longer flag helps it to lie flat.
