Found Objects was based on the idea that inspiration can be found in every nook and cranny of our daily lives, especially the ones that seem the most unremarkable. Each piece in this collection is based on a found object. These objects were gathered from the places I see and inhabit every day. Every item I chose had a story to share, and from those stories came inspiration for seven knitted accessories, which may someday, in turn, inspire someone else.

Knitting: Cowl
There’s nothing like an extra-long cowl during the colder months to make you feel snug and warm on even the snowiest winter day. Abundance was designed to wrap comfortably twice around the neck for a looser look, or three times, for particularly cold, windy days. Crossed double-wrapped stitches make for a simple yet striking texture to finish o...

A conifer (also known as an evergreen) is a type of tree that keeps its foliage all year round and protects its seeds in a cone. Like these trees, the Conifer hat was designed to be resilient even during the coldest winter days. A simple ribbed stitch pattern uses slipped stiches to create an extra dimension of texture and a warm, insulating ac...
Knitting: Shawl / Wrap
Like veins of quartz cutting through another mineral, bands of garter stitch provide a shock of colour in this simple shawl. Short row wedges widen the basic triangle shape, giving you more length to wrap around your neck and keep you cozy. The rest of the garment is kept simple with a textured stitch pattern that’s easy to memorize, making it ...
Knitting: Shawl / Wrap
There’s nothing quite like a prairie sunset. As the sun sinks, the sky is lit up with some of the most vibrant colours nature has to offer, while the earth turns into a labyrinth of long, reaching shadows. Umbra is a simple, delicate design worked primarily in garter stitch, giving the piece a squishy coziness perfect for these crisp prairie ev...

Fallow is all about texture. This light and airy asymmetric shawl starts off in simple stockinette, then switches to an easy-to-memorize stitch pattern featuring rows of eyelets and slipped stitches, and finishes in a contrasting i-cord bind-off. Choose any two skeins of fingering weight yarn that look and feel good together (experiment with co...

There’s something so lovely about the rain. The gentle sound of an evening shower is the most comforting sound while you’re safe and warm indoors. This hat was inspired by the delicate, meandering tracks the rain paints across a window as it falls. It’s also the perfect project to curl up on the couch with as you wait for the rain shower to pas...

If someone asked me to describe Manitoba, I would tell them about long, flat highways flanked by seemingly endless fields of golden wheat, and the aged grain elevators that stand sentry over them. This pattern is an ode to the symbol of the prairies that I’ve called home for my entire life, and especially the city in which I was born and raised...

A haven is a safe place, a harbor, a shelter from the world. You might find it at your home, with your loved ones, or lost in a favourite book. It is a place where you can heal and find peace. Many find their haven in the act of knitting. Each stitch is an act of care, each row a meditation on peace. Haven is a crescent shawl featuring simple b...

When lava cools rapidly at or near the surface, it forms a dark, fine-grained rock called basalt. If the right contraction forces are present when a large lava flow cools into stone, it forms into intricate geometric columns, resulting in beautiful geological features such as the Giant’s Causeway in Northern Ireland. This shawl is formed with t...
