Notes

08-05-2025 Converting to Top Down

I get a better fit from top-down socks and also a better looking picot edging, so I decided to switch this one around. I also ordered the kit way back when and now I see that I will not have enough of the main colour, so, top down means I can switch to the contrasting colour for the toe when I get there.

I am not wowed by the yarn as a sock yarn. It has absolutely no stretch at all; therefore no give that doesn’t come from the fact that the fabric is knit. So I’m curious about how a colour work sock in a worsted yarn is going to come out in terms of fit.

Since the only stretch is coming from my stitches, I decided to work the patterned section with the sock turned inside out so the carried yarns are stretching across the back.
Technical notes to remember for second sock: crochet cast on 70st so that I could get back to the live stitches when I folded the hem. Inside knit on 2.25mm. Picot row and outside knit on 2.5 to keep the hem from rolling. Also, inside 7 rows (2 blue, 5 red) then picot row in blue again and 6 knit rows before knitting it all together. 2 rows of plain knit before starting pattern and 5 rows after before starting heel.

08-16-2025 both sock tops and heels done.

Decided to do a shortrow heel across 34 stitches, wrapped and turned until 9 stitches were left across the middle and then turned the heel. Also decided to knit the heel in the contrasting color because I really don’t think there’s enough of the blue to make most of the foot if I don’t do that. Not that anyone will see the foot except me, but I’d like it to look as nice as possible anyway.

08-19-2025 short rows on the sole

With the short row heel, the sole of the sock is shorter than the top, so I added 2 short rows as follows:
10 rows - knit short row across 33 sole stitches and back (10 rows on top, 12 rows on bottom.
knit another 10 rows - knit shortrow across 33 sole stitches.
