Notes

So intrigued by the Dutch whaler’s caps from the Rijksmuseum that I had to try and make one! Using fine Texel/Merinos wool from the Dutch/Belgian border and dying it with coccinelle, weld, and st. john’s wort to obtain colours similar to what I saw.

Cast on 145 stitches and worked on size 1 needle for 1.5” switched to size 1.5 needle and purled one row to make a folded hem. My intention is to make it 11-12 inches long as were the originals. My gauge is not quite as fine but I couldn’t go any smaller with this yarn without knitting something way too stiff.

I’m thinking I’ll probably hand-spin some nice soft merino in an aran weight for the ‘internal’ hat that I can see in some of these historic hats.
