Yarnadelic Remixes 0.1 is a project combining knitting and music, by friends, knitters and musicians, Felicity (Felix) Ford and Muriel Pensivy. Originally launched as a multimedia online course in the KNITSONIK School with videos, playlists and essays, the patterns are now being offered as a standalone eBook, with chapters appearing throughout the month of November and the completed eBook at the end of the month on November 30th, 2023.
Five accessory patterns lead you on an exciting journey through knitting and sound. You’ll discover a wide range of techniques - knitting double-knit fabric; making Big Lace Holes; beading with a crochet hook; varying contrast to highlight different areas in stranded colourwork; making Magic Yarn Balls - and more. You’ll also be invited and inspired to think more deeply about the connections between the music you love and the knits you create and wear. This is the perfect project for music lovers and lovers of music lovers; a way to celebrate how patterns, rhythms, time, attention and creativity are linked across the two mediums of knitting and of sound.
The first design - Wondrous Waltz - is a matching beanie and mitts set that shows you how to create double-knit fabric and gives you an inspiring set of ideas about syncopation and the effects produced when patterns phase in and out of time.
The second one - Woman In All The Blues - is a statement scarf that uses the picked notes of a guitar riff as the basis for oversized and joyous lace with its roots in Blues music.
The third - Beadism - adorns a cosy for a mini-tablet or a smartphone with the notes from a popular tune from the Penguin Cafe Orchestra.
The same tune also provides the inspiration for a mis-matched pair of mitts that are the fourth design in this collection: Looking For A Stranded Harmonium. In these clever mitts, the motif (based on the notes of the tune) is knit with different shading sequences. Contrast is used to foreground the drone in the left hand mitt, and the tune in the right hand mitt, mirroring the way the musician playing the Harmonium uses their hands to make their music.
The final design in the Yarnadelic Remixes 0.1 collection is Shuffle Play Shawl. This semi-circular shawl teaches you how to make and utilise Magic Yarn Balls, to recreate - in your knitting - the same sense of chance/shuffle that you have in your music when you set it to Shuffle Play Mode.
If you find you love the ideas in the eBook but want to hear more of the music and see more of the creative process behind them, you’ll find a £20 off coupon offered with the book that will enable you to upgrade to owning both the eBook and the Teachable course that hosts all the playlists and videos created as part of producing this project.
