Brought up on the west coast of Wales, I have always loved the sea. My summer days were spent exploring rock pools, reading in the dunes, swimming and building sand castles. After a few landlocked years in later life, we moved to Scotland and re-discovered the coast and all its beauties.
There is something for every mood – be it windy wild walks on stormy days to blow away those winter moods, or soaking in the sun and listening to the waves lapping at the sand. Whether invigorating, refreshing, playful or peaceful, the sea always gives me what I need.
In celebrating the British coast, I also wanted to showcase the glorious variety of British wool. One of the best-known brands is Jamieson’s of Shetland, whose Jumperweight Shetland – famous for the huge range of shades, making it a colourwork dream – is a sturdy workhorse yarn that only gets better with wear. The more delicate Samite from Blacker Yarns blends British breeds with silk to give a luxurious heavy lace-weight with a soft body and incredible drape.
Wearing Chilla Valley Alpaca, a lambswool blend, is like wrapping yourself up in a great big warm hug on a winter day. And the Coulmore 4-ply from Black Isle yarns – first clip yarn from a farm just outside Inverness – gives body and texture to the brioche patterning, with amazing stitch definition.
