In the light of the silvery moon the wendigo howled. Barina had been getting ready for a festive night of trick or treating but stopped in her tracks when she heard the howl. “What was that? Was I imagining a howl? Of course I am.” She thought and she turned back to getting ready for the evening’s festivities. As she looked in the mirror she began to see not only her reflection, but what looked like the Pine Barrens in New Jersey, where she had grown up. She leaned in closer and saw a curious looking creature flying about. He looked just like… wait! No! It couldn’t be. It was! It was the Phantom of the Pine Barrens, better known to most as the mythical NJ Devil. She pulled back and realized her mirror had changed. It was no longer a simple mirror. The border had been transformed into an ornate frame of cascading curves and gilded webs. The mirror reflected only the eerie forest and its habitants. Unbeknownst to them Barina watched in amazement and horror. A curious and horridly disfigured creature lurked. It was the Jersey Devil. She leaned in closer to the mirror and before she knew it, she had fallen into the mirror. With a thud, Barina landed on the plush forest floor. It was damp and swawp like. There was an eerie calm in the air mixed in with the tempestuous aura of impending demise. She shuddered as she felt a cold shiver run through her bones and she knew at that point she “wasn’t in Kansas” anymore.
