patterns > Design your own dream hat

Ever wanted to move beyond following patterns to making something that is your own creation? Not sure how to start? This ebook is aimed at bridging that gap and growing your confidence in making design choices by showing you how to create hats for any recipient in any yarn and stitch pattern of your choice.
This is not a mix and match kind of pattern: you will genuinely be making most of the choices here from yarn, gauge, sizing, stitch pattern and even cast on. This is a book designed to make you work and think and is not a simple set of instructions.
The book will guide you through the decision making processes and maths required to end up with a completed hat that came out of your head. You will be expected to have some prior knowledge (or willingness to do your own research) on:
the concept of row and stitch gauge
knitting in the round
Being able to read and draw charts will help you use the book to work on more complex crown designs but is not essential.
Please note that this ebook is not an introduction to pattern grading (how to create a pattern in multiple sizes) but is aimed at the knitter who wants to make unique things for themselves and their family and friends. That said, there is a lot of information here that will allow you to think about how to make design choices that will more easily translate into different sizes, if that is what you want to do.
The book contains 29 pages of detailed information and recipes to help you learn about hat design. It also contains 3 full traditional patterns in multiple sizes that illustrate some of the design choices suggested in the book. Full instructions for custom sizing are provided with worksheets to help you along the way and work at your own gauge. The pictures show just some of the creations by testers of the recipe. Book contains sections on:
-
the anatomy of a hat and a review of how various shapes of crown and brim are achieved
-
the anatomy of the head and the percentage recipes that we can make from this. Includes information on standard sizes for different ages.
-
How to measure and calculate gauge and how to translate this into your cast on numbers and shaping
-
A review of cast on and bind of techniques for hats, hat embellishment options and finishing techniques
-
A section on the design process and how to move your hat through it to get the best end result.
