Zephyr Slide
Once upon a time, long ago, I had my Fine Romance with Sideways Shells (AKA the “Crazy Stitch”, or “Slanted Granny Stitch”) – creating a bevy of blankets, and several enjoyable shawl patterns. In the afterglow, I thought I had finished with them; we had done it all – or all that I could imagine back then – The Cottage Classic, the Cottage Crescent, and the Cottage Blankets.
But recently as I pondered which stitch pattern to use for a new shawl design, it came to me that I had never attempted a Sideways Shawl using Sideways Shells (nine years ago I did not know about Sideways Shawls - or “Slides” - though they have since become one of my favorite types of shawls.) So the combination was something new, and it appealed to me. But these Sideways Shells are strange creatures - fun to make, but their quirky shape can add an additional challenge when trying to create the pattern.
However, after a few fumbles the design came together in a very cooperative way. It is a simple pattern, easy but not boring, expandable to any size, and (as a bonus!) it is symmetrical, with both sides working up to be the same length! Oh, Serendipitous Slide!
And then, as my daughter was modeling it for me, a gentle breeze suddenly appeared and obligingly fanned out the back of the shawl for a unique photo opportunity. Since Zephyrus, the Greek god of the West Wind, had so favored us, who was I to argue? And so this shawl has been named in his honor…8
