Z Cowl is a great skill-builder pattern. You will gain confidence as you knit in the round, use stitch markers to keep track of repeats and knit from a chart. The circumference of the cowl can be easily adjusted so you can customize the size or use a different yarn weight. Keep in mind that if you adjust the circumference or use a different yarn weight, this will affect the yarn yardage requirement.

I designed this cowl in honor of my dear friend who was diagnosed with Parkinson’s Disease (PD) in 2013. PD is a disorder of the central nervous system. A person’s brain slowly stops producing dopamine, a chemical messenger responsible for transmitting signals within the brain that allow for coordination of movement. Loss of dopamine leaves a person less and less able to regulate their movements, body and emotions.

As I watched my friend live with PD almost on a daily basis and fighting to stay active and not let this disease keep him from the physical activities he loves, I wanted to do something to help with his fight. I came across a scarf I had knit many years ago which was knit in a rib stitch that looked like a “Z” pattern. My friend’s last name begins with Z, and I knew that I wanted to design something knit in this “Z” pattern.

My friend is one of the most positive people I know. He brings those around him up with genuine heartfelt energy. I am passing on his energy with this design. This cowl will surround you with warmth and positive energy. Knit one for yourself and for someone you know who needs a lift. You’ll be glad you did!
