Yorisou
Yorisou means “snuggle up” in Japanese, which perfectly describes what this cozy brioche shawl makes you want to do. It uses two-color brioche stitch, with an i-cord edge and bind-off to give it a clean finish. The stitch pattern is relatively simple, making this an excellent introduction to two-color brioche, or a relaxing knit for those familiar with the technique.
SUGGESTED YARN
Blue Sky Fibers Woolstok Worsted, 100% wool, 123 yards (112 meters), 50g; sample shown in “Storm Cloud” (A, 150 g), “Cast Iron” (B, 150 g), and “Spun Gold” (C, 100 g).
OR
Indigodragonfly Wingenhooven DK, 60% superwash merino/20% yak/20% mulberry silk, 250 yards (228 meters), 100g; sample shown in “Scotch Eggs and Hamish” (A, 150 g), “I Can Haz Berry?” (B, 150 g), “The Teal-Tale Heart” (C, 100 g).
A note about suggested yarn: While one of the recommended yarns is worsted weight and the other is DK weight, they have similar yardage per gram, and knit up at the same gauge. Using a 100% wool with some loft (like Blue Sky Fibers Woolstok) will give you a shawl that has more structure, while a blend that includes wool, yak or alpaca, and silk or similar (like Indigodragonfly Wingenhooven) will create a drapier shawl. Both options are lovely!
GAUGE
13 stitches and 23 rows/4 inches (10 cm) in two-color brioche stitch, after blocking
Gauge is not critical as long as you like the feel of your finished fabric. However, be aware that if your gauge differs, the amount of yarn you need may vary. As written, the pattern uses nearly all of Color C, in particular, so you might require an additional skein if you do not match gauge.
NEEDLES
US 6/4 mm 40” (100 cm) circular needles or longer, or whatever size you need to achieve gauge
SIZE
One size, approximate dimensions 62” (157 cm) across top; 32” (81 cm) depth; 41” (104 cm) edges
