This is a square shawl knitted in one traditional Shetland manner - centre first, then borders out and finally the lace. The centre is in Issue 23, with the borders in 24, the lace edging in 25 and details of how to dress/block in 26.

Two sizes are given and details are given for both ‘1 ply’ and ‘2 ply’ yarn. The 1 ply version uses 3.25 needles and the 2 ply version uses 4.5 mm needles.

Tension for the 2 ply version is 19 sts and 38 rows to 4 ins.

The 1 ply version takes 200 (300) g ie 3000 (4400) yards.
The 2 ply version takes 550 (800) g ie 4100 (6300) yards.

The centre can stand alone, and the borders can sensibly be stopped at various points if you run out of yarn, time or energy. The shawl also works without the lace edging. The pattern would also work with thicker yarn as a throw.
