This pattern is both charted and contains full written instructions. Friends are everything and more to me. They are my chosen family and are woven into my life in such a special way. That’s what this shawl is to me; my life is woven out of the love of all of my friends who share my passion of knitting. This design is the combined work of my great friend Maria and me, and I hope it shows what beauty can come out of such a fabulous friendship. Woven Friends is knit from the bottom up with a hint of lace, continued with knitted fringes that are then woven together and knit into garter stitch short rows to make the crescent shape that lies wonderfully on your shoulders. Keeping the love of your friends wrapped around you. Always.
Approximate dimensions after washing and blocking: 73 cm/29 inches deep and 140 cm/55 inches wide. Skill Level: intermediate
Yarn: Approximately 800 meters (874 yards) fingering weight yarn; 2 skeins Nicole C. Méndez Merino in the color Strawberry Daiquiri, Nicole C. Méndez Merino Seide 50/50 in the color Nebel, or Dream in Color Everlasting Sock in Tidal.
Needles: 32” or longer US 6/4 mm circular needles.
Notions: Waste yarn for a possible lifeline, 5 to 8 straight pins to help with weaving the fringes, along with a pillow of soft fabric cushion, or possible a mouse pad to stick the pins in to keep your fringes straight while weaving.
Gauge: 22 sts/4 inches after blocking in garter stitch, although gauge is not important, but your final dimensions and yardage requirements may vary if your gauge is different. Special techniques: You will be knitting fringes, weaving them together, and then picking up stitches at the top of each fringe to continue knitting. This is a bit fiddly but I’ve included a picture tutorial in the pattern to help complete it and you will see, it’s well worth the effort.
