Flash knitting is dependent on color repeat, size of skein and gauge. A sweater can be pushed slightly smaller or larger than written but not by much or the flash will be interrupted. Fewer stitches will make the flash skew to the left in a spiral; more stitches will make it skew to the right. Armholes are formed with steeks, allowing the flash to continue to the neckline. If a different size is desired, one option is to steek the sides all the way down and add underarm gussets to enlarge the sweater’s girth. The gussets won’t match the body, but also won’t interfere with the appearance of the flash, as we can see with the half-linen-stitch sleeves, Here we have occasionally increased or decreased a stitch or two to the keep the flash moving back and forth. You have ultimate control!
