I designed this sweater in the midst of a cold wave this winter, which inspired me to select a thicker, fluffier yarn than my usual. My goal was to make an elegant sweater that felt like wearing a blanket. Kelbourne Woolens Germantown was perfect for this purpose. It shows stitch patterns well, and its slight halo makes a cozy fabric. The peplum with cables and smocking stitches is extra-long to ensure that the sweater doesn’t ride up in back. The cables extend to the waist to create a slight hourglass shape, then convert to stockinette stitch to provide plenty of ease in the bust. The smocking and cable patterns reappear on the sleeves. The result is a tailored sweater with a swingy hem that will keep you warm in winter.
