Inspired by a painting by artist E.M. Corsa of a hat discovered in a bird’s nest at Christmas time, this vibrant fair-isle design bursts with dynamic shapes and rich colors. It features striking vertical bands of red, alternating with sunny yellow leaf-like motifs, all set against a deep green backdrop.

A playful row of polka dots, created with easy-to-knit bobbles, adds texture and charm. To make this hat your own, you’re encouraged to choose your favorite color combination—you’ll need about 45 yards each of seven colors.

Topped with a fluffy pom-pom, this cozy hat is as delightful to wear as it is to knit. The artist who painted the original hat wrote, “I wish you a winter hat to keep your ears warm.” In that spirit, I named it the “Wishing Hat.”

With its cheerful design and heartfelt inspiration, this whimsical pattern is perfect for adding warmth and brightness to chilly days.
