Winter Garden is a little girls’ woolen jumper with a stranded colorwork motif to brighten the winter landscape. Worked at a fine gauge in a woolen-spun 2-ply wool, the jumper is light but warm, beautiful enough for festive occasions but not too precious for puddle stomping. The details in this design make it at least an adventurous intermediate-level project, and even expert knitters will have the chance to practice unfamiliar techniques like the Channel Islands cast-on and Anna Zilboorg’s “perfect buttonholes,” which lend heirloom quality and durability to the jumper. Suggestions are given for substituting simpler techniques, should you desire to do so.

Winter Garden is sized for girls aged 1 to 7 and is designed to fit comfortably over a shirt and leggings, with 1-3” of ease. Skirt length may be adjusted if you prefer a longer dress or a shorter tunic style. The skirt is proportionally longer in the larger sizes.

Needles:
US #3 (3.25 mm) circular needles, 24” length, plus 16” US #3 to work narrowest part of skirt in smaller sizes, or size that gives you gauges. You may also prefer a 32” length for the wider portion of the skirt.
US #2.5 (3 mm) circular needle for hem and garter edges, long enough for magic loop (use two circs or dpns if preferred)
