Windmill Vest
Windmills were built to drain water from the lowlands for homes and gardens, to cut wood, and grind wheat and rye. To me, windmills represent home, shelter, bread and flowers. Everything cozy or as the Dutch would say, “gezellig”. Once we were in the Netherlands for Molendagen, when all the mills are open for a weekend, and our little family rode the bike paths of North Holland from windmill to windmill. It was a magical time when our youngest child could keep up with the oldest, yet they were all still under the same roof. We will never forget riding from sunup to sundown, hearing the mills creek with each turn, learning Dutch history, eating poffertjes from freshly-milled flour and just being together. Time stood still, for a moment at least. This vest is a love letter to that day and to the Netherlands and to my family who make the best traveling companions through life imaginable.
