Wild Thrums
Thrummed mittens are a staple in Canadian knitting, specifically the island of Newfoundland. Bits of unspun fleece are knit into the fabric to create a coxy interior while also creating a fun texture on the exterior. These mittens play off that tradition while adding in some striping to mix things up. In addition, instructions are included for making and improvising on the traditional thrums. This pattern is one that will inspire you to not only knit thrummed mittens, but play with them!
Materials
Approximately 205-245yds/187-224m worsted weight yarn, 115-145 yds/ 105-133m MC and 80-100yds/73-91m CC.
Sample shown in Briggs and Little Heritage, colourways “Bergy Blue” (MC) and “Bleached White,” (CC) 215yds/197m per 113g skein.
Approximately 50g of fibre for thrums. Sample shown in Fleece Artist Merino Silver in colourway “NL Blueberries” and Fleece Artist Corriedale Silver in colourway “Rainbow”
4.0mm (US 4) needles for working in the round.
4.5mm (US 5) needles for working in the round.
