Wick Shawl
The third shawl in The Shawl Society Season 3
“I’ve stolen a garden,” she said very fast. “It isn’t mine. It isn’t anybody’s. Nobody wants it, nobody cares for it, nobody ever goes into it. Perhaps everything is dead in it already. I don’t know…It’s a secret garden, and I’m the only one in the world who wants it to be alive.”
When Mary first finds her secret garden in the chill of early spring, it is twisted and grey with neglect. The life inside those lonesome branches is hidden very deeply. The poignancy of Mary’s own loneliness and her eagerness to love the garden back to life is what finally drives her to tell Dickon her secret and lets him into the garden. It’s an act of trust, and another step towards friendship. Dickon knows immediately that there is joy to come in the garden, and the promise of abundant beauty. It is “wick”! Alive and lively, and ready to burst into bloom once the earth begins to warm.
Wick is an exuberant triangular shawl, inspired by the stirring of the garden just before it comes back to life. The fade of three colours plays with the many shades you find in growing things: the flush of a bud or the flash of brightness just under the bark. A hint of lace might remind you of new leaves about to unfurl. The design is modern, simple, and fun. It’s fabulous for combining favourite single skeins from stash, and the easy garter stitch base makes this is a fast and satisfying knit.
