Casual, cozy, and stylish: Who Could Stay is the kind of sweater you’ll style with everything you own. We’re thinking layered with collared shirts, tossed over t-shirts, or your new coffee-and-pajamas go-to.

Who Could Stay is graded on our Men’s Size Chart. Compared to our other garments, this sweater does not decrease as rapidly from the chest to the shoulders, has a deeper shoulder rise and armscye, and has a broader shoulder. It is also written for a taller frame.

Note: This pattern includes a modification guide for adding bust darts for wearers with breasts. We hope this means you have fewer modifications to make as you embark on creating your dream sweater — and that you learn a new skill you can take to all your future projects!

CONSTRUCTION

You’ll begin Who Could Stay by working the front and back flat from the bottom up, leaving the shoulder stitches live. You’ll seam the sides, and use a 3-needle bind-off to join the shoulders. Stitches are picked up for the sleeves and the sleeve cap is worked with short rows, then the sleeve is worked in the round and finished with an optional sewn tubular bind-off. Finally, you’ll pick up and work stitches for the folded neckband, which is stitched to the inside of the neckline.

Your best fit

Choose the size closest to your cross front measurement: 12.5 (13.75, 14.75, 16, 17.25) (19, 20, 21.25, 22.25) inches / 32 (35, 37.5, 40.5, 44) (48.5, 51, 54, 56.5) cm

Measure your cross front at the underarm. To take this measurement, place the tape measure at the top of the crease of the underarm and measure straight across to the opposite underarm.

Who Could Stay is designed to fit with approximately 4.5 inches / 11.5 cm of positive ease at the fullest part of your chest.

If you need additional room for the bust, working the optional short row shaping will give you the best fit in the shoulders and armholes, while still making room for your chest. Short rows add length to the front only of the garment, so that the hem does not rise in the front.

YARN

100% US Rambouillet; 355 yds / 325 m per 100 g skein. This is a delicate, light, woolen-spun, lofty wool that looks sheepy and feels soft. Expect a slightly thick-and-thin width, soft stitch definition, and minimal drape. This yarn blooms and fills in with blocking. Shown in colourway Ghost.

Note: This yarn is delicate until knit, and may tear when pulled. Consider using a matching worsted-spun yarn for seaming.

22 sts and 35 rows in 4 inches / 10 cm worked both flat and in the round in Waffle Stitch with size A needles after blocking.
